How I lead

I set the direction and strategic guardrails, and trust my teams to make the day-to-day decisions within them. That means giving people ownership and being deliberate about when to step in. I challenge them to take on unfamiliar, ambitious problems and give them the space to solve them.

What my teams can count on

  1. Fixed time, flexible scope. When the time can’t move, a team decides early what really matters, and ships that.
  2. Async first. Decisions live in writing, so the team gets long stretches of focus and nothing important disappears in chat.
  3. Credit goes to the team, loudly, especially when senior management is listening.
  4. Before the team builds anything, I make sure the stakeholders around it agree on what it’s for. That’s my work, so the team can focus on theirs.
  5. I coach my product leaders to make the calls themselves, so decisions don’t wait on me.

Principles

Get the little things right

I introduced cool-downs between build cycles: a stretch with nothing scheduled, so teams could fix bugs, pay down tech debt and polish the details that never make it onto a roadmap. I did it because a great experience is the sum of a hundred thousand small things done right.

Give people more than they expect

When I joined Decathlon, the shopping app was a plain ecommerce store. My vision, Beyond the transaction, made it more than a place to buy: an app that adds value between purchases for the brand’s biggest fans. The wow moments came from augmented reality, in-store features and a more personal experience.

Try it and find out

At Highstreet, Slack was where everything happened, and that was the problem: constant interruptions, pressure to reply instantly, and decisions buried under the next hundred messages. So I proposed taking chat out of the company. People were nervous at first. Then the noise dropped, decisions moved into writing where everyone could find them, and teams got long stretches of focus back. It took some getting used to. It was worth it.

About

I live in Utrecht, in the middle of the Netherlands, with my wife and our two kids. Outside work you’ll find me on my road or gravel bike, cooking with whatever’s in the kitchen, or listening to music of all kinds.

Me in cycling kit and a helmet, taking a selfie on open heathland with my gravel bike behind me.
A pan of fish cooking in oil on a Big Green Egg, with the lid open and steam rising.
Two of my kids on a wide beach, one sitting on a bodyboard while the other pulls it across the sand.
Our curly, light-brown dog looking up at the camera.
